Muddy Knees Media and the Totally Football Show are delighted to announce that we are now part of The Athletic.
Since their UK launch in 2019, we’ve been profoundly impressed by The Athletic’s commitment to quality journalism. Indeed, we share many of their values, from the enthusiasm that drives our work to our desire to provide comprehensive coverage by verified experts. Together, we’ll be able to make some of the best podcasts in the world.
Muddy Knees Media was built on a shoestring. We had little in the way of starting capital and we didn’t seek investment. We grew from our little room with our friends at Jazz FM to our own studio in Soho, from one podcast to over a dozen, and from one full time member of staff to a team of six. And we did it all by working hard and repeatedly reinvesting hard-won revenue.
It’s been an exhilarating experience, but it’s time to take the next step. The podcasting industry has changed dramatically since 2017, bringing both new challenges and new opportunities. This deal gives us the ability to surmount the former while taking full advantage of the latter.
So what changes? Well, let’s start with what doesn’t change. The Totally Football Show, and all of her sister shows, will continue to be free and available from all major podcast providers. Our team will continue to produce the chart-topping BBC podcast ‘You’re Dead To Me’ and BBC Radio 4’s much loved ‘Homeschool History.’
Subscribers to The Athletic will be able to listen to ad-free versions of our football shows on the Athletic app. It’s one of the many benefits of being a subscriber. So if you don’t like the ads, subscribe now and listen without them. And if you’re happy with everything just the way it is, then don’t worry. You won’t have to lift a finger to maintain the status quo.
We’ll also be setting up a new department dedicated to the production of some of the finest football audio you’ll find anywhere on earth. And that will all be available in the same way: ad-free on The Athletic; ad-supported and free everywhere else.
We’re really looking forward to working with The Athletic’s incredible team of writers, with a correspondent for every Premier League club and some familiar voices, like James Horncastle, Carl Anka, Amy Lawrence, Rafa Honigstein and Michael Cox. And also with our friends at Tifo to ensure that, when it comes to audio, video and written football coverage, The Athletic leads the way.
Finally, we’d like to thank you, the listeners, for your support over the past three years. Every listen, every subscription, every review, every recommendation, helped to sustain us, especially in those terrifying early days. Thank you for listening, thank you for believing in us and make sure you stick around for what’s next. We can’t wait to get started.
