Are Manchester United good now?
It’s an unsettling thought, but in the two games since the Premier League returned, United have looked…well, good. Particularly on Wednesday evening against an admittedly lacklustre Sheffield United.
Hugh Woozencroft was on the Totally Football Show this week, and although all the signs are there pointing to something of a revival, he’s not quite convinced that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man for long-term glory at Old Trafford.
“They do look really good. It does look like the foundations are coming into place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“We had a couple of callers to the [TalkSPORT] show, who made the point that if you add a couple of players in there – maybe another striker, a different centre-back, Jadon Sancho looks likely – suddenly you’ve got yourself a very good team. If they play like they did against Sheffield United, suddenly you’re looking at a pretty serious team.
“I think Solskjaer will be proven in time to be a foundations-type manager. He will be seen to lay the groundwork for one of the big managers in Europe in the next two years, 18 months, to try and take the team to another level. If he gets them in the top four, that is fantastic for him, that’s fantastic for the club.
“He’s got Marcus Rashford, it looks like he’s turning Anthony Martial into a goalscorer and a proper centre-forward, the defence looks better and it looks like Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes could make a pretty lethal combination in central midfield.
“And it looks like he could keep Paul Pogba, which many people might be surprised about but could be massive for the club.
“Will he take them onto Premier League titles and European Cups in the future? I still have my doubts.”
