Ipswich Town look set to be consigned to a third season in League One – they’re so bad that the local media have fully turned on manager Paul Lambert…
Things are reaching a critical mass at Ipswich.
This week, the Ipswich Star and the East Anglian Daily Times declared on their front pages that they believed Paul Lambert should be sacked as the Tractor Boys’ manager.
It takes plenty for a paper to lay their cards on the table to that extent even if it’s just confined to the sports section, but to put it on the front page is another matter entirely.
There is a reason why, though. Lambert may only be one part of what’s gone wrong at Portman Road over the last few years, but it’s a pretty big part and their 1-0 defeat to Peterborough at the weekend was their eighth of a season that has shown maddening inconsistency.
“It’s just desperate,” said Sam Parkin on The Totally Football League Show this week.
“Their record against top ten sides is abysmal over the last two seasons: played 27, won four, drawn eight, lost 15. 20 points from a possible 81. That just shows you where they are.
“A real, distinct lack of creativity, no goalscorers in that side at the weekend, one shot on target – in the 80th minute.
“[The season] is not going to end in the playoffs – I don’t really know what Ipswich are.”
“They’ve lost to the current top seven, they’ve only scored two goals against them, and I guess they find Lambert pretty uninspiring,” added Michelle Owen.
“Some people as neutral might step back and see Ipswich in ninth, but they’ve got 35 points and two or three games in hand on the teams around them.
“So if they’re going to make a change they will have to do it soon.”
But should this have been splashed over the front of two local newspapers?
Sam Parkin says no: “I don’t agree with what the local paper has gone with this morning – they’ve started a campaign [against Lambert] – I know they’ve got to be the voice of the supporters but I don’t think that’s particularly helpful for the players.”
But Adrian Clarke disagreed: “These people can’t kid the fans. They’re watching in real detail. If the local journalists are pandering and going softly softly, people will see through that.
“I get it – it’s definitely not helpful, Lambert will hate it and they’ll probably ban them.
Apart from COVID and hospitals being full, probably the biggest story in Ipswich right now is how rubbish they are.
“They’re a huge club, they should be getting promoted from League One. The fact they’re so woeful right now – I think that’s front page news.”
