After a slightly sticky start to the Scottish Premiership season, there has been some backlash against Derek McInnes’s tenure at Aberdeen.
The Dons have only lost two of their seven league matches so far, but one of those was last weekend’s 5-0 hiding at the hands of Rangers, and there is already a groundswell of their support who argue that things have gone stale, and after six years in charge McInnes has “taken them as far as he can.”
However, the Totally Scottish Football Show’s JJ Bull has spent much of this week arguing on Twitter with the naysayers, and he brought that to the podcast this week.
“A lot of people want McInnes out. They are bored, the football can be brutal at times, they are fed up with only finishing third., They want someone to come in to reach ‘the next level’ [and think] they should never have lost to Hearts, never have lost to Rangers. Honestly, I think they need to chill the f**k out.
“Getting gubbed by Rangers, for an Aberdeen fan, is devastating, because in the last few years they’ve finished second, second, second, second, then fourth behind Killie (but that was on goal difference). McInnes consistently hits his mark: so in the first four seasons he was supposed to finish second, last season he was supposed to finish third.
“They have lost their best players every single season. Every single year, McInnes has had to rebuild. Look at Kenny McLean [who went to Norwich in 2018] – impossible to replace, playing in the Premier League right now.
“Rangers spend £30million from when they have come up, plus wages on Jermaine Defoe, Steven Davis, who were on about £120,000-a-week and £80,000 at Bournemouth and Southampton. Aberdeen’s entire weekly wage budget will be about £50-60,000.
“You can’t compare [the budgets], but Aberdeen still have to compete with them. I understand people being frustrated with it, but I think McInnes has proven how to build a team.
“You can’t finish higher than second. Second is what you get. People get bored and want change: they’ve lost two games in a row, that’s it.”

Kieran Canning broadly agreed, but did wonder if there was one element that McInnes could improve on.
“The one thing I think McInnes could have done better is the style of football, not the results. It always surprises how often managers go for ‘pragmatic’ football – people always say it’s a results business, but if you’re a manager who play good football and the results aren’t quite as good, or you have a sticky spell, the fans will still go with you because it’s more enjoyable to watch.
“If you’re an Aberdeen fan now going through a difficult spell of results, there’s very little enjoyment there because there’s so little enjoyment in actually watching your team play.”
