Inter want Romelu Lukaku. Romelu Lukaku wants Inter. Manchester United would probably be happy to sell Romelu Lukaku.
So why hasn’t it happened yet? The Totally Football Show’s James Horncastle offers some explanation.
“Essentially Lukaku changed representation to market him to Italy and get him to Italy,” said James on the latest edition of the Totally Football Show. “That agent has good ties with Inter. Back in April Lukaku had a big sit down with Sky Italia to say that it had always been a dream of his to play in Italy one day.
“Inter are serious, Antonio Conte is very serious, he obviously wanted to sign him when he was at Chelsea…but it looks very difficult to get this deal done, because Manchester United’s valuation is very different to Inter’s.
“They want €83million for him, which is more or less exactly what they paid Everton, whereas Inter have offered around €54million with some add-ons. I think there’s a real feeling they can’t go any higher at this moment in time.
“Inter have a few players they want to move on: nobody has gone near the player that Lukaku would replace, Mauro Icardi, so far; Radja Nainggolan isn’t part of Conte’s project. And the club has come out and said this, which has impacted on their values, in that everyone knows they’re up for sale and Inter need to get rid of them.
“I don’t think there has been any official offers for them so far, but you wouldn’t blame clubs for lowballing them, saying ‘We’ll take them off your hands for this amount.’ That’s left Lukaku stranded at United.”
